Policies The department of Health had issued on 9th August 2007 a new “Policy Instructions on the Ethics of Human Embryo and Embryonic Stem Cell Research” (人類胚胎及胚胎幹細胞研究倫理政策指引). In addition, a new national legislation of “Human Embryo and Embryonic Stem Cell Research Act”(人類胚胎及胚胎幹細胞研究條例草案) was approved in the Executive Yuan on 24th July 2008. These new guidelines call for special scrutiny on human embryonic stem cell research with rigorous ethical standard and define permissible and impermissible experiments. We believe that adherence to international standard will ensure a role of Taiwanese stem cell researchers in international collaborations. Furthermore, the Department of Economic Affairs has also committed to sponsor the establishment of Taiwan Stem Cell Bank, which we believe will be another critical catalyst for further international collaborations.
