WELCOME FROM THE TSSCR PRESIDENT
On 16th of April, 2005 we established the Taiwan Society for Stem Cell Research (TSSCR). The mission of this Society is to promote the exchange of stem cell research and to provide education to the general public in Taiwan. The Society also provides opportunities for interactions among researchers of related international societies and stem cell networks.

We believe that advances in studies of stem cells will open up exciting research avenues and foster new technologies from which many novel therapies will evolve. Taiwan has an opportunity to take part in this blossoming field of research. In the last year, we have called for stronger government support of stem cell research in Taiwan. Funding agencies have heeded the call and are planning to increase funding and consolidate resources.

The privilege of carrying out stem cell research, especially when involving human embryonic cells, will come with obligations as well. We realize that the challenges stem cell researchers are confronting with are not only technical, but also ethical and societal. We are committed to strengthening policies to promote proper research conduct and compliance with regulatory guidelines. Furthermore, as our scientific capabilities advance, we have and will continue to engage the public in the evolving societal discussions of the implications of this important work.

I am very pleased to be leading these efforts at the TSSCR and am delighted with the colleagues who join us on this adventure.

John Yu, M.D, Ph.D.
